皇帝ペンギン(March of the Penguins)

皇帝ペンギン -La Marche de l'empereur-

Each winter, alone in the pitiless(過酷な) ice deserts of Antarctica(南極大陸), deep in the most inhospitable(住むのに適さない) terrain(地域) on Earth, a truly remarkable journey takes place as it has done for millennia. Emperor penguins in their thousands abandon the deep blue security of their ocean home and clamber onto the frozen ice to begin their long journey into a region so bleak(吹きさらしの), so extreme(極限の), it supports no other wildlife at this time of year. In single file(列), the penguins march blinded by blizzards, buffeted(打つ) by gale(強風) force winds. Resolute(決心の堅い), indomitable(不屈の), driven by the overpowering urge(願望) to reproduce(繁殖させる), to assure(保証する) the survival of the species.

Guided by instinct(本能), by the otherworldly(別世界の) radiance(輝き) of the Southern Cross, they head unerringly(間違いなく) for their traditional breeding ground where - after a ritual(儀式の) courtship(求愛) of intricate(複雑な) dances and delicate maneuvering(駆引き), accompanied(~といっしょに) by a cacophony(大きな混ざった音) of ecstatic(歓喜の) song - they will pair off into monogamous(一雌一雄の) couples and mate.

The days grow shorter, the weather ever more bitter(激しい). The females remain long enough only to lay(産む) a single egg. Once this is accomplished, exhausted(疲れきった) by weeks without nourishment(食物), they begin their return journey across the ice-field to the fish-filled seas. The journey is hazardous(危険な), and rapacious(肉食の) leopard seals(アザラシ) a predatory(捕食性の) threat. The male emperors are left behind to guard and hatch(ひなをかえす) the precious(大切な) eggs, which they cradle(抱いてあやす) at all times on top of their feet. Subjected(さらされて) to subzero(氷点下の) temperatures and the terrible(猛烈な) trials(試練) of the polar(極地の) winter, they too face great dangers.

After two long months during which the males eat nothing, the eggs begin to hatch. Once they have emerged(現れる) into their ghostly white new world, the chicks(ひな) can not survive(生き残る) for long on their fathers' limited food reserves. If their mothers are late returning from the ocean with food, the newly-hatched young will die.

Once the families are reunited(再会), the roles reverse, the mothers remaining with their new young while their mates head, exhausted and starved(飢え), for the sea, and food. While the adults fish, the chicks face the ever-present threat of attack by prowling(うろつく) giant petrels(ミズナギドリ). As the weather grows warmer and the ice floes(浮氷) finally begin to crack and melt, the adults will repeat their arduous(困難な) journey countless(数えきれないほど) times, marching many hundreds of miles over some of the most treacherous(危険な) territory on Earth, until the chicks are ready to take their first faltering(よたよたした) dive into the deep blue waters of the Antarctic.
